What is protected time?
At The Odyssey, every instructional minute counts. Our teachers have a specific plan from the first greeting at Morning Meeting until the final bell of the day. The last half an hour of the school day is considered protected time on campus. No scholars may be picked up during this time. If at all possible, scholar dentist and doctor appointments should be scheduled for Fridays, and should never be scheduled during protected time. Parents should wait outside the gates until 4:00 to pick up their scholars from school.
Do you have sports?
Beginning in Jr. High we offer a variety of competitive sports. We encourage our elementary scholars to take part in one or more of our varied after-school clubs.
Do you provide full day Kindergarten?
We are committed to transitioning our scholars seamlessly through their progressions, from Kindergarten through graduation! For the second half of the upcoming school year, it is our intent to extend the school day of our Kindergarten scholars by 2.5 hours, in order to best prepare them for their first grade year.
Here’s how this works:
1. Semester 1 (August to January)
- Kindergarten classes will be either am kinder (7:30-11:30) or pm kinder (12:00-4:00)
- Class sizes will be significantly reduced fostering intense instruction in both academics and school appropriate behavior.
2. Semester 2 (January to June)
- Both am and pm kinder classes will merge into a modified full-day schedule, (7:30-2:00) building their stamina while still remaining developmentally appropriate to their needs.
- Scholars will remain with their same Kindergarten teacher just participate in a longer day with more friends.
- Kindergarten scholars will be able to more fully participate in school-wide activities such as Kudos, Lunch, and Lunch Recess, helping them learn the procedures for each of these and easing the transition into 1st grade.
3. Extended Care Options
- Paid extended care options will be available for parents. More information will be available upon enrollment.
Why do they have to wear shoes that tie?
Tying your shoes is one way to promote the development of fine motor skills. These skills are very important in the early years of school. In addition to promoting fine motor skills, tied shoes just stay on little feet better!

- K-5th grade scholars wear the green uniform shirt and Dickies brand school uniform pants or shorts (girls may also wear capri’s) in black.

What is the Homework Policy?
At The Odyssey Preparatory Academy we never use homework as a punishment, busy-work, or to introduce new concepts. We have designed our instructional blocks to allow for both introduction and practice of new material each day. Scholars may be assigned homework to either remediate skills or extend classroom learning with long-term projects.
Why do I need the Parent Portal?
The Parent Portal is a one-stop-shop for all things that have to do with your scholar. You can access it by clicking on the link here on the website. (Located on the right hand side of the page)The password-protected Parent Portal is where you will find a variety of resources such as lunch menus, flyers for school events, teacher newsletters, and student grades. Who do I call when my child is absent?
You may contact the front office staff by either calling or emailing the school your scholar attends. For scholar absences to be considered excused they must be recorded as such by the office staff. How long have you been in existence?
The Odyssey Preparatory Academy family of schools is five years young! We have experienced phenomenal growth in the number of scholars we have been privileged to add to our campuses in the past few years. While we anticipate that our numerical growth will begin slowing down as we fill our campuses to capacity…we have no intention of stopping our growth in academics, innovation, and the arts!
What are your boundaries?
As a charter school, we are a school of choice. That means you may choose to apply for admission to any of The Odyssey Preparatory family of schools, regardless of where you live. The majority of our scholars live in Goodyear and Buckeye communities. However, we have scholars residing in communities throughout the West Valley who attend our schools.
Are your teachers certified?
We make every effort to hire teachers who are certified. Our expectations for our teachers are as high as those we have for our scholars! Teacher resumes are kept on file and may be viewed at the front desk during regular office hours.
What do the fundraising dollars go to?
The money raised from school fundraisers is funneled directly into the purchase of technology for our classrooms and subsidizing field trips for all grades. We choose our scholar’s field experiences based upon their overall contribution to our curriculum, not based upon price. Because of this, we work very hard to raise money throughout the school year to make these a possibility for every scholar.
Does your school provide free or reduced lunches?
No. We do not offer free or reduced lunch. However, if your family is in need of financial assistance, please contact the front office and we will provide you with information regarding such services.
Do you provide transportation?
We offer a paid bussing service which has multiple stops in the Goodyear and Buckeye communities. The fee for the bus service during the 2015-2016 school year is $45.00 per one scholar, per month. Pricing adjusts to reflect the number of children in a household: (For example: 2 scholars $85; 3 scholars $120; 4 or more scholars $140). Please log into your Parent Portal Account by CLICKING HERE. Select “Bus Registration” under the “Transportation” menu.
Do you require immunizations?
The state of Arizona requires that every scholar be immunized or fill out a waiver before starting school. We take this very seriously and ask that all scholars be up-to-date on all immunizations. Please contact the school nurse at your campus if you have any questions on this.
